essentially it is the Sum of cashflows, discounted by some interest rate, for the time of the cashflow.

NPV = CF/(1+i)t

(1+i is to the power of t, not multiplied)

• You both agree that after 7 years, the equipment will stop working and can be sold for its parts for about $5,000. - how is this accommodated when trying to calculate in a spread sheet?
